Maruti Suzuki India Stopped Production of Maruti 800 : Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) on 7 February 2014 announced that it has stopped the production of the iconic car brand Maruti 800 that had been carrier for millions of middle class Indian families. The company in its announcement claimed the production was the car was stopped in 18 January 2014.Executive Director of MSIL, CV Raman in the announcement said that the spare parts of the car will be available in the market for next 8 to 10 years as per the rules, even after the production was stopped.
Banks declared Two day Strike against proposed bank reforms and demands wage hike : The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) on 9 February 2014 declared a two day all India strike of banks. The strike is being carried out to protest against proposed banking reforms and in support of their demand for an immediate revision in wages. The strike commenced on 10 February 2014 and will end on 12 February 2014. The strike of UFBU has been joined by 27 public sector banks, 8 foreign banks, 48 regional rural banks across India and 18private banks. UBFU claimed that over a million employees in all these banks, barring the co-operative sector banks, are taking part with around 90000 bank branches to remain shut for two days.
Olympian distance runner Ranjit Bhatia died : Ranjit Bhatia, an Olympian long distance runner died on 9 February 2014 in New Delhi. He was 77. He was popularly known as Bhatia Sahib. He was a famous long and middle distance runner, sports journalist and educationist. He was a Rhodes Scholar and a student at Oxford University. He was honored with an Order of British Empire award for his services to the game and his role as a bridge between sports ofIndia and United Kingdom.
Srinivasan elected as Chairman of ICC from July 2014 onwards : Arayanswamy Srinivasan, the President of BCCI on 8 February 2014 was elected as the new Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). His tenure of the office will begin in July 2014 for a period of 2 years. This decision was taken by the ICC Board during their meet in Singapore. He will succeed Alan Raymond Isaac.
India’s Economy to grow by 4.9 percent in 2013-14, CSO : Central Statistics Office (CSO) in its release on 8 February 2014 estimated that India’s economic growth in the current (2013-14) fiscal will be 4.9 percent as compared to the growth rate of 4.5 percent in 2012-13. In its release, CSO said that the growth rate in the manufacturing and mining sectors will continue to remain a cause of concern.
Sushil Koirala elected as the next Prime Minister of Nepal : The Parliament of Nepal elected Sushil Koirala as next Prime Minister of Nepal on 10 February 2014. Sushil Koirala is a veteran Nepali Congress (NC) leader.The general election of Nepal was held on 19 November 2013. In the Constituent Assembly of 601-member the NC has 194 seats, while the CPN-UML has 173 seats.
Bindra became 1st person to win three gold medals in Tri-series shooting : Abhinav Bindra, the Indian shooter on 8 February 2014 won his third gold-medal in the Inter-Shoot Tri-series Shooting in the Air Pistol event. With this, he became the first person to win three gold medals in the event that is being held at the Hague, Netherlands.To win the third gold medal, he shot 209.3 in the finals and finished ahead of the second-placed shooter by 2.4 points. On 7 February 2014, Bindra also topped in the qualifiers in the second competition and ended with a final score of 627.7 points being ahead of Alin George Moldoveanu, the Olympic champion by 6.6 points.
The Union Government has increased the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) for sugarcane by 10 Rs per quintal for marketing season of 2014-15. This decision of sugar price hike was taken during a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs held in New Delhi.
For infrastructure projects, India is offering buyer’s credit of $100 mn to Namibia. Anand Sharma, Commerce and Industry Minister made this offer while he visited Namibia. A unique programme of Exim Bank, Buyer’s Credit helps Indian exports by way of extending credit facility to the overseas buyers for financing their imports from India.
The Sochi Winter Paralympic Games 2014 has commenced in Sochi, Russia with dazzling opening ceremony. The Olympic Stadium has 40,000 seat capacity. More than 88 nations along with participants are competing in Sochi.
